Federal marshals Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) are assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from a hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island. The agents must deal with the uncooperative Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley), his staff and a hurricane while trying to uncover a seemingly sinister plot. Daniels also has his own agenda of hunting down his wife's killer while dealing with migraines and horrific visions. "Shutter Island" is a suspenseful psychological thriller that's dominated by Leonardo DiCaprio's multi-layered performance and Martin Scorsese's masterful direction. Based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, Scorsese pieces together this mind-boggling puzzle in true Hitchcock style. While nearly void of action, there's plenty to think about as the deceptive story unfolds. The entire cast is terrific, right down to even brief appearances. Besides the three leads, Max von Sydow adds an evil presence as Dr. Naehring. Michelle Williams is haunting as the murdered wife of Agent Daniels. Ted Levine, the killer in "The Silence Of The Lambs" and Captain Stottlemeyer on "Monk", has one very creepy scene as the warden - where he explains to Teddy his theory on the true nature of man. Emily Mortimer, Patricia Clarkson and Jackie Earle Haley also add to the mayhem. Nerve-wracking chills are enhanced by Robert Richardson's atmospheric cinematography. For Scorsese and DiCaprio, "Shutter Island" is a shuddering departure from their last big screen teaming.
