TRIVIA: Who directed the 1985 TV mini-series on which this movie is based? ROG'S VIEWPOINT ![]() ![]() ![]()
(4 CAMS) RATED RWhen his daughter Emma (Bojana Novakovic) is murdered in front of him, revenge-bent Detective Thomas Craven (Mel Gibson) uncovers more than he bargained for. "Edge Of Darkness" is a riveting suspense thriller from start to finish. Based on the 1985 BBC television mini-series, this compact adaptation is aided by the brilliant casting of Mel Gibson as the determined and haunted detective. Gibson returns to the big screen a little older and worn, but still a tough guy to reckon with. Director Martin Campbell's ("Casino Royale") deliberate slow-pacing gives his star just enough time to develop the character. It is Craven's relentless quest that matters and drives this film, since there is no mystery in separating the heroes from the villains - thanks to a fine supporting cast. Ray Winstone is superb as Jedburgh, a sympathetic operative who cleans up government and corporate messes. Danny Huston is at his loathsome best as Jack Bennett, the corporate head of a government contracted business who may have ties to Emma's death. The performances alone are worth the admission. There are spurts of violence and action that earn the R rating. "Edge Of Darkness" should keep you on the edge of your seat.
