UP

UPPowered by balloons, a house airlifts homeowner Carl Fredricksen (the voice of Ed Asner) and a stowaway to faraway lands in the latest Pixar animated feature.

TRIVIA: This is the first Pixar movie to be filmed in what format?

Retired balloon salesman and widower Carl Fredricksen (the voice of Ed Asner) fulfills a lifelong dream of seeing South America by sailing off in his house powered by thousands of balloons. Along for the ride is reluctant stowaway Russell (voiced by Jordan Nagai), an enthusiastic 8-year-old Wilderness Explorer. Together they experience the thrill of a lifetime. "Up" is magical animated entertainment for the entire family. Running the gamut of emotions from tears of joy and laughter to sadness, this whimsical tale provides another Best Picture nomination possibility for those animation masters at Pixar. Director Pete Docter and Co-Director Bob Peterson not only helm this visually impressive delight, but both also penned the heart-filled screenplay from a story they co-wrote with Tom McCarthy. Peterson is also the voice of Dug, an energetic, but not too bright, dog who follows the travelers. Breathtaking computer-generated landscapes, fully-developed endearing characters and unforgettable music (composed by Michael Giacchino) continue a tradition that Walt Disney started with his own studio. Combining with Pixar was a good move for the Disney folks. There are only a few recognizable voices in the cast besides Ed Asner. Among them are Christopher Plummer as outcast explorer Charles Muntz and the studio's good luck charm John Ratzenberger as Construction Foreman Tom. Get to the theater early because there's a cartoon short that shouldn't be missed. "Partly Cloudy" is brilliant and hilarious. Giving the plot away would spoil the fanciful fun. If you happen to miss it, "Up" is still the main reason to attend. Practically perfect in every way, this is Pixar's most uplifting adventure yet!

TERMINATOR SALVATION

Christian Bale & Anton YelchinIn a bleak future, John Connor (Christian Bale) must save the life of Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin) in order to survive.

TRIVIA: Who played Kyle Reese in 1984's "The Terminator"?

ROG'S VIEWPOINT
       (2 CAMS)     RATED PG-13

John Connor (Christian Bale) and a group of survivors wage a battle against killer machines after Skynet launches a nuclear attack. The war intensifies with the arrival of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), whose only past memory is of being on death row. Now Connor must decide Wright's fate while trying to rescue young Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin) - John's father. With so many plot twists, "Terminator Salvation" should be an intellectual masterpiece. But sadly, it's mostly brawn with very little brain. Director McG ("Charlie's Angels") covers the entire movie with McAction, leaving the story by the wayside. He blows up enough stuff to fill several Michael Bay epics. Most of the cast members appear to be just going through the motions. Christian Bale grunts and growls from beginning to end, while apparently staying in character off-screen. The women don't fare any better. Moon Bloodgood sees plenty of action as resistance fighter Blair Williams, but Bryce Dallas Howard has too few scenes as Connor's wife Kate. Helena Bonham Carter appears briefly as Dr. Serena Kogan, who is connected to both Wright and Skynet. Jane Alexander is almost entirely lost as a human survivor. The acting kudos go to the gritty and emotional performance of Sam Worthington with honorable mention to Anton Yelchin's fearless Kyle Reese. We'll see more of Worthington in "Avatar" and Yelchin is flying around space as Chekov in "Star Trek". I sat through the disappointing "Terminator Salvation" waiting to see if Arnold returns and wishing for the return of TV's "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles". The movie's tagline "The End Begins" could be prophetic for the theatrical series - it may or may not be back.

STAR TREK

Zachary Quinto and Chris PineThe origins of Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) are explored in this new sci-fi adventure.

TRIVIA: Zachary Quinto is one of the stars of what popular 2006-2009 sci-fi TV series?

When vengeful Romulan Captain Nero (Eric Bana) creates an alternate timeline through a black hole, young James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and the youthful crew of the USS Enterprise are drawn into their first dangerous mission. Pumping new blood into the tired space adventures, "Star Trek" takes off in a mind-blowing and wildly entertaining direction. Simply brilliant, everything about this cinematic journey is fresh and exciting. Director J. J. Abrams is anything but lost, guiding the fascinating script by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman with astounding special effects and an amazing cast. Besides Chris Pine, who adds a new dimension to Kirk, Zachary Quinto is spot-on as the younger Spock. Leonard Nimoy is on board as the aging Spock, who figures prominently into the story. Also outstanding are Karl Urban with several cutting remarks as Bones and Simon Pegg, showing up late as engineer Montgomery Scott. Rounding out the crew are John Cho as Sulu, Anton Yelchin as Chekov and Zoe Saldana as Uhura. With a nod to the television series' origins, Bruce Greenwood portrays a stoic Captain Christopher Pike, who commanded the Enterprise before Kirk. Ben Cross and Winona Ryder are memorable as Spock's parents. With so many good performances, it's easy to overlook Eric Bana. But it is Bana carrying the plot as a frightening revenge-seeker who rivals Ricardo Montalban's Khan for great Trek villains. There are several references from the past to please fans, but none of them are cheap shots. They all are relevant to the story. Destined to become a sci-fi classic, "Star Trek" boldly goes where none of the previous entries have gone before.

ANGELS & DEMONS

Tom HanksSymbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) tries to stop a plot against the Vatican in director Ron Howard's latest thriller.

TRIVIA: Which 1984 fantasy film starring Tom Hanks was directed by Ron Howard?

ROG'S VIEWPOINT
camcamcamcam     (4 CAMS)       RATED PG-13

The threat of disaster after the Pope's death prompts the Vatican to call upon the services of Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks). Four possible successors have been kidnapped and a destructive weapon has been stolen and hidden somewhere in Vatican City. With the implied return of old Catholic Church adversary The Illuminati, Langdon and physicist Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer), who helped develop the missing weapon, must unravel the clues before it's too late. Based on Dan Brown's novel, "Angels & Demons" is an interesting popcorn thriller that's loaded with twists and turns. Anyone looking for strictly facts about science versus religion needs to look elsewhere. Ron Howard's direction is faster-paced than "The Da Vinci Code" - with little time to think about the plot holes. Howard's gift for assembling a great cast continues here. Besides the impeccable Tom Hanks and the beautiful Ayelet Zurer, the ensemble includes Ewan McGregor as Camerlengo Patrick McKenna, who is temporarily in charge until a new Pope is named. Stellan Skarsgard commands some screen time as the Vatican's chief of security Commander Richter and so does Armin Mueller-Stahl as Cardinal Strauss, who has his eyes on the Papal throne. There are many puzzles to solve before arriving at a moderately surprising conclusion. Some eye-popping special effects and spectacular Rome scenery fill in the gaps. "Angels & Demons" earns its wings as an intelligent action movie.

THE HANGOVER

Cast of THE HANGOVERThree groomsmen lose the groom-to-be after a wild night in Las Vegas. Bradley Cooper and Justin Bartha star in this comedy of errors.

TRIVIA: In what movie series did Justin Bartha play a character named Riley Poole?

Phil (Bradley Cooper) and Stu (Ed Helms) take their soon-to-be-married buddy Doug (Justin Bartha) to Las Vegas for a wild night. Along for the ride is Doug's future brother-in-law Alan (Zach Galifianakis), who has trouble fitting in with any group. Among the items forgotten on their night to remember is the groom-to-be, who turns up missing. Now the desperate threesome must piece together the night's activities and get Doug back before the wedding. "The Hangover" is a riotous, gut-busting, laugh-filled comedy of errors. Director Todd Phillips ("Old School") keeps the gross-out humor to a minimum while centering on the consequences of a supposed drunken binge. Without giving too much away, the morning after involves a baby, a stolen police car, a missing tooth and a tiger among other things. Most of the fun is in watching Helms, Galifianakis and Cooper as hapless victims frantically searching for answers. There is a taser scene that is absolutely hysterical. None of the leads have reached stardom yet, but that could easily change on the basis of their performances here. Heather Graham is among the supporting players as Vegas beauty Jade, who helps loosen up the strait-laced Stu. Even Mike Tyson gets in on the act. This movie is getting a lot of great buzz and it is all deserved. "The Hangover" will induce headaches - from laughter.
